Circuit Description

The engine control module (ECM) supplies a 5-volt supply to the engine coolant level sensor using a common sensor supply circuit. The ECM also provides a ground on the sensor return circuit. The coolant level sensor 1 monitors the engine coolant level within the coolant system and passes information to the ECM through the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) harness and engine harness.

Component Location

The coolant level sensor 1 is typically located in the radiator top tank or surge tank. Refer to the OEM service manual for location.

Shop Talk

Some engines are equipped with a 2-wire sensor instead of a 3-wire sensor. The 2-wire sensors do not have the 5-volt supply wire in the circuit. Possible causes of this fault code include:

  • Open return or signal circuit in the harness, connectors, or sensor

  • Signal wire shorted to sensor supply or battery voltage

  • An open supply circuit in the harness (on 3-wire sensors only).

Refer to Troubleshooting Fault Code t05-197.
